The natural world has enthralled me from early childhood. Dark black skies with millions of brilliant stars, quickly moving clouds with continuously evolving shapes, colors and shadows, the thunderous churning power of a river's falls, the sharp crack of lightning followed by the deep rumbling of thunder: all serve as information stored and subjects of artistic expression.
The pen and ink works are interpretations of the natural world, not in a representational manner but as an abstraction of the seemingly random nature of the natural landscape. The quickly inscribed and predominately unpremeditated succession of marks describes the richness, complexity, and energy of events occurring in nature.
The works completed over the last few years are expressions of lightness and density. The marks are spontaneously made in order to evoke a language of the subconscious.
If I am able to capture a small view into the underlying mystery of the extraordinary phenomenon we call nature, then I feel that my goal has been accomplished.
